About Chikan Embroidery

Chikan embroidery, also known as Chikankari or Lucknowi Chikan, is a traditional embroidery style from Lucknow, renowned for its delicate handwork that transforms plain fabrics into flowing works of art. The word "Chikan" derives from a Persian term meaning "embroidered fabric." For over 200 years, Lucknow has been the heart of this craftsmanship, earning Geographical Indication (GI) status in December 2008, recognizing it as the exclusive hub for this art.

History of Chikankari

Chikankari traces its origins to the Mughal era in the 16th century, flourishing under the patronage of Mughal rulers and later the Nawabs of Awadh. Some believe it was introduced by Nur Jahan, the wife of Mughal Emperor Jahangir, a skilled embroiderer. Initially, it used white thread on white muslin, creating subtle elegance, but over time, it evolved to incorporate various colors and intricate designs.

Patterns and Stitches

Chikan embroidery features about 32 distinct stitches, each adding unique texture. Key stitches include:

  • Tepchi: A long running stitch for outlining patterns.
  • Bakhiya: Shadow work, creating a subtle, raised effect.
  • Hool: A fine detached eyelet stitch, often forming the center of a flower.
  • Phanda: Small, millet-shaped stitches for floral motifs.
  • Murri: Rice-shaped stitches adding texture.
  • Jali: A delicate, net-like pattern created by drawing threads from the fabric.
Motifs are inspired by nature, featuring floral patterns, paisleys, and lattices, reflecting Lucknow’s heritage.

Our Craft: The Soul of Chikan Embroidery

We bring this tradition to life using fine fabrics like cotton, georgette, and chiffon. Our artisans employ these stitches to create intricate designs. Each piece is handcrafted, taking 3 to 15 days to complete, and we prioritize eco-friendly dyes and fair trade practices for sustainability.
